Representative image — not a photograph of Kastel Fortress.

Kastel is the 17th century Venetian star fort on the hill above the old town, built to a four-point plan and still ringed by its defensive walls. It houses the Historical and Maritime Museum of Istria, with exhibits on the region's sea history and military past. The walk up rewards you with the best panorama over the city, the harbour and the Arena. Entry is €7 for an adult and €3 for children, students and over 65s, the same ticket structure as Zerostrasse since both are run by the same museum. The drawback is the climb: the hill is a steep ten minute walk from the Forum, and there is little shade on the way up in summer.
