Choosing where to stay in Pula comes down to one decision: do you want to walk to the Arena or walk to the sea? The city centre and the beach peninsula are 15 minutes apart by bus, and picking the wrong one for your trip is the most common mistake visitors make here. This guide sorts it out.

Old Town and Centre
Stay here if your trip is about the city: Roman sights on your doorstep, the market for breakfast, dinner without a taxi, and nightlife you can walk home from. The trade-off is that swimming means a bus or a 25 minute walk, and streets near the bars carry noise in summer.
Best for: couples, short city breaks, anyone without a car, October to May visits.
Central properties to compare include Hotel Amfiteatar and Boutique Hotel Varia. Apartmani Ivan is listed as a self-catering option. Confirm location, facilities, availability and the full price directly before booking.
Verudela
The resort peninsula, 3 km south: hotels, apartment blocks, pine woods and the best cluster of beaches in the city, including Blue Flag Ambrela and lively Hawaii. Buses 2 and 3 run to the centre every 20 to 30 minutes in season.
Stay here if the holiday is mostly about swimming. Families get shallow-entry beaches and short walks; the resorts have pools for the days the sea is choppy. The trade-off is that Verudela is a purpose-built resort zone, so evenings feel more hotel-complex than Croatian town.
Park Plaza Histria is the established large resort here, with the pools and sea access that justify the area.
Stoja
The western peninsula, quieter than Verudela, dominated by the four-star Arena Stoja campsite. This is the answer for campers, campervans and anyone wanting glamping or a mobile home rather than a hotel room. Stoja beach faces west, so you get sunsets the rest of the city doesn’t. Bus 1 runs to the centre.
Medulin and Premantura
Ten to fifteen kilometres south, and a different holiday: long shallow beaches at Medulin, Cape Kamenjak on the doorstep at Premantura, and a lot of apartment and campsite stock. Prices per week beat Pula proper, and families with young children often prefer Medulin’s gentle bay to anything in the city.
You need a car, or you will spend the week on buses.
Fažana
Small fishing town 10 km north, and the departure point for Brijuni. Calm, good seafood, walkable, with the islands across the water. It suits people who want a village base with Pula as the day trip rather than the reverse.
When to Book
Pula sells out in a way it didn’t five years ago. For July and August, book two to three months ahead, especially for apartments with parking and anything on Verudela. June and September are far more forgiving, and you’ll pay noticeably less for the same room. Between November and April, take your pick, but check that your place is actually open, since much of Verudela closes.
Practical Notes

- Air conditioning is not optional in July and August. Confirm it exists rather than assuming.
