Pula’s coastline is mostly rock and pebble, which is good news for families: the water stays shallow a long way out and there are no sudden drop-offs. The trick is picking the bay with the right mix of shallow entry, a lifeguard, some shade and food within reach. Here is how the main family beaches rank.

Ambrela

Ambrela is the easy first choice. It is a Blue Flag pebble bay with a shallow, gradual entry, a lifeguard on duty from 10am to 6pm in season, and showers, changing cubicles and sunbed and pedalo hire on site. There is a car park and a couple of beach bars, so you can arrive at ten and not need the car again until dinner. The drawback is the crowd: by late July it is full by eleven, so come early or after four.

Hawaii

Hawaii Beach sits next door on Verudela and is the busiest beach in the city, which means the most to do: three beach bars, pedal boats and plenty of other families. The entry is pebbly and shallow. The drawback is exactly that popularity: it is noisy and the sand-free shore gets crowded, and parking nearby is limited and pricey in summer.

Valkane

Valkane is the closer-in option, a short walk or bus ride from the centre, with a concrete and pebble shore and a seasonal beach bar. It is calmer than the Verudela pair and popular with locals with small children. The drawback is the facilities: fewer of them than Ambrela, and the concrete gets hot underfoot by midday, so bring shade.

Medulin bay

The wide bay at Medulin, a few kilometres south, is the gentlest water near Pula for very small children: a long shallow sandy and pebbly shelf and space to spread out. It is not one single managed beach but a stretch of shore with cafes behind it. The drawback is the distance: you will want a car or the summer bus, because it is too far to carry a toddler and a week’s worth of beach kit on foot.

The dog beach note

If your family includes a dog, the Blue Flag beaches ban dogs, but Valovine is an official year-round dog beach on Verudela with forest parking and a calm bay. Our full best beaches near Pula guide covers every bay and cove.
